Nobila Gwyneira a fost promisa fiului unui bogat „baron al oilor' si tanara guvernanta Helen a acceptat sa se marite cu un fermier. Destinul lor se va implini in aceasta tara straina, care le-a fost descrisa ca un paradis.

Loved Book 1 and now Book 2. I'm looking forward to reading the final book in this series.
It was rich in description of New Zealand at the time of the early settlers. The description of the coal mines and the people who worked the mines, the sheep barons and the Maori was thorough and fascinating.
But the best part of this multi-layered story is the characters. They seem so alive. The author really brought them to life for me.

I love historical fiction and this book covers generations of several families who settled New Zealand, their lives, their hopes, suffering, hardships, and the love of family. This is a wonderful story filled with romance and of the strong women who lived in that time and place. I generally don’t pay too much attention to the ads on my Kindle, but this was a triple whammy: historical fiction set in New Zealand for $1.99? Oh Amazon, you sure do know the way to my heart, and to my Mastercard. Seriously, the ad for “Song of the Spirits” appeared just as I had been agonizing over what would be an appropriate first book review post. Since there are few things I love more than New Zealand and bargains, I (uncharacteristically, I swear) clicked “buy” before knowing anything else about this book. I might have noticed that it is the second book in a “saga” (is that like a “series?” a “triology”? I am not sure), but that didn’t deter me from diving into this one, so don’t let it deter you either.I loved it. The book centers on two cousins, Elaine and Kura, in colonial New Zealand as they transition from adolescents to adults, but there is so much more going on here. The family has a complicated history, and, admittedly, some of the details were confusing, though I’m pretty sure reading book one of the “saga” will straighten that out (oops).
The girls’ family members, as well as their love interests, made for compelling characters, and I found myself just as interested in some of the side stories as in the central action. The book opens with Elaine’s story, and cousin Kura doesn’t seem to have much going for her besides a big head until later in the book, but her grandmother, who is also her primary caretaker, moves her story along. I will add that Grandma Gwyneira acts a bit shady, but I’m just gonna let that slide. The descriptions of the landscape – geographically and socially – of late nineteenth century New Zealand serve as far more than the backdrop for the story. Reading good historical fiction gives you a sense of a particular time and place, so that you sneakily end up learning something while you’re caught up in all the “he said what to her? Uh uh!” In the afterword, Lark writes that “although New Zealand’s history is relatively short, it was been all the more precisely recorded as a result.
Practically every town has an archive that contains the names of the settlers, their farms, and often, details of their lives.” This absolutely makes me want to read more about the history of New Zealand – after I read book one, of course.Rest of my review is at. Song of the Spirits is the sequel to In the Land of the Long White Cloud. It follows the next generation of Gwyneira McKenzie. The coal mines with their greedy and irresponsible owners were not endemic to New Zealand but rather a fact of those times the world over. The Maori tribes are play a significant role in the story as they do in the first book.I enjoyed this big fat read very much. Wow, this was a long book, but I really enjoyed taking the 700-page journey into historic New Zealand. While I didn't love this book quite as much as the first in the trilogy, I still gobbled it right up. I think what I missed most this time around was all the insights into the Maori culture that the first book brought.
Still great, sweeping storyline with fantastic characters, settings, plot points. The final showdown at the end had me on the edge of my seat, which I was not expecting. I went ahead and bought all this author's other books and plan to read them all after a short break. Highly recommend! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Also, I'm a bit annoyed to Gwyneira for letting Kura marry William so easily, because it makes it seem like she cared more about Kura and her happiness than she cared about Elaine. Though she did live with Kura and raised her at least partly, so it might be understandable that she would mean more to her than her other grandchildren who she sees less.
And there is also the fact that Kura was the heir of Kiward station, which was also Gwyneira's home, and since Kura could do anything she wanted with it once she became an adult, so it's understandable that Gwyneira might have wanted to secure the future of her home. But still, her decisions at the beginning of the book made me a bit upset. Lark recounts.the sometimes peaceful, sometimes uneasy relationship between the Maori natives and the pakeha-the colonists. William is the son of landed Irish nobility, and he comes to town ready to invest in the best equipment. On his search for supplies, he encounters spirited and beautiful young Elaine O'Keefe, who promptly falls in love with him.
He is captivated by her charms until Kura, Elaine's half-Maori cousin, comes to visit. William succumbs at once to Kura's exotic beauty and free-spiritedness, and tension develops not only between the two cousins but also between the colonial settlers and their Maori neighbors.Loved this series, learned NZ history at the same time. This doesn't live up to the first book in any way. The handy coincidences have gone through the roof and every character is one-sided and ridiculous.
They show character growth troughout the book, but not much is given to justify this growth. Also almost everything takes place in a whole new place with new people, so we see very little of the people we know and love from the first book.
I absolutely refuse to think Helen could be that stupid. And I'm growing very tired of sexually sadistic This doesn't live up to the first book in any way. The handy coincidences have gone through the roof and every character is one-sided and ridiculous.

There isn't one original character here. The reason I don't give it one star, is that it was actually a page-turner and I read it all in one night. The lady knows a thing or two about telling a story.
Amazing series!!!I’m not sure I can convey exactly how amazing this authors books were! I was caught up and absolutely spellbound by her fantastic characters and story line!! One of the best authors I’ve had the privilege to discover. I fell in love with her strong female characters, who endured unspeakable pain at the hands of some nefarious men, including their husbands! The plot twists kept me gasping at each turn in utter amazement! I’m personally hoping she continues with this story into yet more books! A faithful fan I’m now waiting anxiously!!! I have read this and book one of this 3-book series and am currently about 20% into the final installment.
I have enjoyed this series. If one likes historical fiction then these books are for you. I have learned a lot about British people, New Zealand and life in the 19th and early 20th century from the books. I have also learned how to treat and how not to treat a spouse! It took lovely Elaine 3 chances to find her beloved. Her whole unfortunate encounter with the Sideblossoms could have been avoided, but I supposed we make choices and sometimes find out the hard way they are wrong. I hope the third book continues their love story.
The adults agravate me. Gwyneira has more of a backbone, than shown in this sequel. I wish someone would taken Kura over their knee and spanked her.

Perhaps, New Zealand was more progressive than the rest of the English speaking world.
